Tough opener to OIA season
for Waipahu

While St. Louis goes to Maui for its final tuneup before the Interscholastic League of Honolulu season, the Oahu Interscholastic Association takes center stage tomorrow with six league openers.

The ILH will open next week.

In the spotlight will be a Red Conference clash at Aloha Stadium between three-time defending OIA champion Kahuku and a much-improved run-and-shoot Waipahu team.

Waipahu head coach Sam Delos Reyes has one of the league's best quarterbacks in Kaiser Seumalo and some talented receivers.

But what worries Delos Reyes is that he said he knows almost nothing about new-look Kahuku.

"We didn't get a chance to see them play this year so we're in the dark," said Delos Reyes.

Kahuku offenses have been dominant this decade. But the latest edition of the team, now under the guidance of Siuaki Livai, touts defense as its strong suit.

Returning Red Conference all-star linebacker Alvin Manutai leads the Red Raider defense.

Two factors could play into the Marauders' hands:

1) Kahuku has traditionally been a slow starter and there could plenty of kinks to work out in this opener.

2) The Red Raiders enter this season a little colder than other teams, with only one preseason game under their belts, a 17-10 victory against Damien.

The rest of tomorrow's OIA slate has Roosevelt at Waianae in another Red game; McKinley at Moanalua and Leilehua at Pearl City in White Conference games; and Mililani at Radford and Nanakuli taking on Kaimuki at Roosevelt in Blue Conference matchups.

On Saturday, Campbell meets Farrington at Roosevelt in the Red, Aiea faces Kalaheo at Kailua in the White and Waialua travels to Kaiser in the Blue.

At War Memorial Stadium tomorrow night, 10-time defending Prep Bowl and ILH champion St. Louis will wind up its preseason against Baldwin High.

"They play hard-nosed football and they've got a big, physical team," said St. Louis head coach Cal Lee.
