Hawaii cost of living
information available online

Where can I obtain figures comparing the cost of living in Hawaii to that of other states? I also would like to investigate Hawaii's housing costs in relation to the rest of the nation.

The state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism doesn't know if such comparative data exist here.

But it does have a lot of information comparing the budget of a family of four on Oahu by items to what a family of four would pay on the mainland. That information is contained on Page 339 in the 1993-94 State Data Book. An updated table will be included in the latest version of the data book, which will be published next month. If you want to get that table, call the department's business resource center at 586-2424 and the information can either be faxed or mailed to you. The current data book is available in any reference section of the state public library system. The department also has a web page, which is http://www.hawaii.gov./dbedt.

"To a wonderful and caring lady in a pickup truck with her family who stopped and called the police on her cellular phone when I was stranded on the H-1 freeway near Middle Street when my rear tire had a blowout Aug. 15 around noon. She did not leave until a police officer arrived. Two additional officers arrived and all three police officers remained at the same scene until the tow truck came. They were very patient, considerate and comforting to a helpless driver. God bless all of you and a million thanks." - K.K.
