Fairway to charity in
Clarey Tourney

Chick Clarey
IT'S time once again for all you golfers to tee up for charity. The tourney held annually at the Navy-Marine Golf Course to benefit the Boy Scouts has a new name this year. In recognition of one of its co-chairman for 25 of the past 26 years, the tourney is now called the Admiral Chick Clarey Memorial Swing-a-Club for Scouting tournament. Chick Clarey, who died earlier this year, was a triple recipient of the Navy Cross during World War II - the only higher award being the Congressional Medal of Honor. Besides being a former Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Clarey was also a Bankoh V.P. and state chairman of the Hawaii Heart Association. The tourney is Sept. 12 and spots are still available for anyone wishing to support the Scouts. Call Wes Heu at 595-6366 for more info ...

AND speaking of golf, George Ariyoshi, no less, is sending out reminders that there are special kamaaina anniversary green fees at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel course ($45) and Hapuna ($40) to mark their 31st and second anniversaries, respectively, as well as $125 per night room rates at both throughout September. The former governor is now president of Prince Resorts Hawaii, which operates the two properties as well as the Hawaii Prince Hotel ...

THEY'RE Breeden easier - uh, make that "breathing easier" at the home of Jerry & Maggie Breeden. Because the temperature didn't reach 93 on Aug. 31, they didn't have to give away the store at their Royal Hawaiian Heritage Jewelry as part of a promotion. But there's still tension in the household. With Cristy Agres, Mrs. Hawaii 1996, off to Las Vegas to compete in the Mrs. America Pageant, the Breedens will be rooting louder for her than most. Should Cristy win the Mrs. America title, her Mrs. Hawaii title will automatically go to the runner-up, none other than Maggie Breeden! ...

Have some Madeira, m'dear?

FANS of the Limelighters will remember their classic tune of seduction, "Have Some Madeira, M'dear?" Well, there are some folks in Honolulu who are connoisseurs of the sweetish wine, and have bottles in their collection dating back to near the turn of the century - the 19th century! Three such collectors, Gene Do, Gene Wong and Tawfig Kouhry, joined by attorney Bob Richards, dropped the gastronomic gauntlet on Hawaii Prince exec chef Gary Strehl to create a dinner with which they could sample nine rare vintages dating from 1809 to 1893. Since Madeira is traditionally an after-dinner wine and not an accompaniment to food, Strehl had his work cut out for him. But he and Prince Court restaurant manager Mark Shishido rose to the challenge and created a menu of miso salmon with roasted shallots and wild mushrooms, soy peppered duck and foie gras with grilled mango and asparagus and the piece de resistance was a chocolate pate with roasted pistachio nuts that the Madeira lovers felt was the perfect match for an 1875 Madeira ...

MANY people dream of moving to England or Ireland and opening their own pub. Dillon Wood, whose name sounds like a setting out of Shakespeare, is just such a man. The former Tony Roma's honcho here, Wood now operates a place called the Trafalger Tavern in Greenwich - recently named Tavern of the Year by the London Evening Standard ...

Bionic Woman

Ed Doty
FRIENDS of former Outdoor Circle head Betty Crocker are comparing her to the bionic woman. First she had a knee replacement, and now the doctors want to put in a new hip. I asked if they're rebuilding her from the ground up, and she replied, "I told them all I need is a new brain." Anyway, Crocker is behind the "Renaissance Evening" Sept. 14, which begins at the JMD Winery and then moves next door to the Xeriscape Garden, run by the Board of Water Supply. There will be such Renaissance activities as jousting, dancing and the like, and wrought iron gates will be dedicated in honor of the late Ed Doty, the Eagle Distributors boss, who was instrumental in getting the Garden built ...
