MYRON Waiolu Cummings was a lovable rascal, a spark who lit up a room with music, hula and laughter. That spark was lost Monday when Myron, 55, died following a lengthy illness. Myron was the son of the late composer Andy and Kalu Cummings. Myron would often lead his troops to wherever Mahi Beamer was performing. They would all sing and have a ball. With Myron ailing, some of his friends last month went to St. Francis Hospice and sang and danced for him. Included in the group were Mahi, Tony Conjugacion, Vicky Hollinger, Allen Kam, Maka Kaaihue, Wanda Williams, Penny Kelii and Vicky's son David McGuire. Myron was a scamp. I recall a happy session at Boyce Rodrigues' Watertown when Marlene Sai, Myron's cousin, sang "Waikiki," a classic written by Myron's dad. After Marlene's fine rendition, Myron rose and said with grandeur, "Now I'll sing the song the way it was intended to be sung." And he did. On Tuesday, family and friends gathered at Oahu Cemetery chapel for the viewing. Marlene sang "Waikiki" beautifully. After the last note, she paused, then said loudly, "Myron, that's the way it's supposed to be sung." Everyone roared with much-needed laughter. It was the first time Marlene had the last word with Myron ...THE HAWAIIAN Music Hall of Fame board has elected new officers in time for Thursday's induction of hall honorees. Monsignor Charles A. Kenny "Bones" Johnston, Big Isle HVB boss, and Holiday Inn-Airport G.M. Randy Ahlo were among the visitor industry vets there for a dinner.
