Ryan Takeshita of Kaimuki High School has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Hawaii Cimm's Inc., which owns and operates Burger King restaurants in Hawaii, for making the "most progress through persistence and determination" in school.
Alicia Maeda has won the $1,000 Peter Resurrection Scholarship from the Hawaii Federation of Teachers. The Konawaena High School graduate will attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa and become a veterinarian.
Katherine Kaya of Iolani High School has been awarded two scholarships from Washington State University: a $3,500 multicultural scholarship, for four years, and a $1,750 Glenn Terrell Presidential Scholarship, for two years.
Reneé Arnold, a French instructor at Brigham Young University-Hawaii, has received an all-expenses-paid scholarship to study French in Besancon, France, by the Alliance Francaise of Hawaii, the National Federation of the Alliance Francaise and the French government. The alliance has also awarded $250 scholarships to Lt. Joseph Srouji of Schofield Barracks and Eileen Root, a Kaneohe librarian.
Jasmine Au and Mark Inouye received $250 scholarships to the University of Hawaii at Manoa from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Honolulu chapter. Au also received the Pele Award of Merit and the Outstanding Student award in graphic design from the UH.
Christopher Tseu of Kaimuki High School has received a full four-year band scholarship to Hawaii Pacific University, where he will study oceanography or law.
Kristen Eguchi, Nicholas Fonseca, Kara Kaneshiro and Ethan Young of Maemae Elementary School were named state finalists in a U. S. Department of Agriculture artwork competition marking the 50th anniversary of the National School Lunch Program.
Winners of prizes and awards at Hawaii Preparatory Academy's commencement exercises included Grant Ka'aua, Lianne Goto, Corey Nelson, Helene Honda, Kevin Kitagawa, Chris Mons, Trisha Kobayashi, Sarah Clark and William Prince. Math teacher Howard Hall won the Alumni Association Award for 32 years of distinguished service.
Monica G.L. Young of Kailua has won the $1,000 Margery Monfort Wilson Scholarship. She is a senior at Colorado State University.
Stephanie W. Chang of Honolulu, a graduate of the University of Denver, has been awarded a James Madison Fellowship, which will fund up to $24,000 of studies toward a master's degree in teaching American studies.
Five students have won the Sons & Daughters of the 100th Infantry Battalion's annual essay contest and scholarship programs, which promote awareness of the first combat unit composed of Japanese-Americans. Kristen Nagata of Baldwin High received $1,500. Kristie Morikawa of Moanalua High, Cara Kanemoto of Honokaa High, Timmy Nozaki of Washington Intermediate, and Stanton Richard of Hawaii Baptist Academy each were awarded $100 U.S. savings bonds.
