Sea Warriors open in
volleyball, soccer

The Hawaii Pacific University women's volleyball and soccer teams opened their seasons today on the road.

The Sea Warrior women start their volleyball season under first-year head coach Tita Ahuna with matches against Colorado-Colorado Springs and Alabama State in the Hawaiian Style Classic at Hilo's Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Also competing in the four-day tournament are Brigham Young-Hawaii, Humboldt State (Calif.), Chaminade, Dowling (N.Y.) and host University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Coaches Mark and Alexis Kane will guide HPU's women's soccer team against Central Washington at Olympia, Wash., in a first-round match of the Evergreen State College Tournament.



KOP EARNS MID-AMATEUR BERTH

Brandan Kop earned Hawaii's lone spot in the 16th United States Mid-Amateur Golf Championship yesterday, winning the qualifying tournament by a stroke at the Leilehua Course.

Kop, who earlier won the state amateur stroke play title, was the only player to break par. His 1-under 71 round included four birdies, an eagle and a double bogey.

Guy Yamamoto beat Dick Sieradzki in a playoff to earn the alternate slot after they shot 72s.

The Mid-Amateur Championship is set for Sept. 28-Oct. 3 at Connecticut's Hartford Golf Club and Tumble Brook Country Club.



VULCANS PICKED FIRST

The University of Hawaii at Hilo women's volleyball team was picked to win the 1996 Pacific West Conference title by a vote of league coaches. Chaminade was picked to finish fifth in the NCAA Division II conference.



JONES FINISHES SECOND

Dawson Jones of Pupukea was second overall in the 32-mile Catalina to Manhattan Beach paddleboard race last Sunday with a time of six hours, 36 minutes, 57 seconds.

California's Jeff Stoner won with a time of 6:28:03.

Other Hawaii participants included Buzzy Kerbox, third in 6:42:36; Laird Hamilton (8th, 7:39:03), Peter Curry (9th, 7:39:55) and Rick Williams (17th, 8:18:26).

Kauai's Doug Bonar placed fourth in the stock 12-foot division with a time of 7:44:09.



ALOHA STADIUM BUSES

TheBus Aloha Stadium Football Express will run for Saturday's football game at 3:30 p.m. between Boston College and the Hawaii Rainbows.

The express buses will service the Windward area, Hawaii Kai, Kahala Mall, Kaimuki, Waikiki, the University of Hawaii and Ala Moana Center. The one-way fare is $2 (no change given). Transfers will not be issued or accepted and passes will not be honored. Schedule information is available by calling 848-5555.



OKAMOTO VOLLEYBALL CLASSIC

Twenty high school boys' volleyball teams were to begin pool play at 4:30 p.m. today at the Kamehameha and McKinley gyms in the sixth annual Longy Okamoto Classic.

The tournament winds up tomorrow, starting at 9 a.m., with the top two teams from each of four pools competing for the championship at Kamehameha and the other teams playing at McKinley.



RAINBOW BASEBALL MEETING

There will be a meeting for full-time registered University of Hawaii students interested in playing baseball for the Rainbows.

Prospective candidates should meet Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Rainbow Stadium blue section directly behind home plate.

BASEBALL TEAM FINISHES 1-3

The Baseball Alliance of Hawaii, an all-star team of 13- to 15-year-olds, won one and lost three games in the 15th World Boys Baseball Goodwill Tournament last week at Alameda, Calif.

The team, coached by Duke Chinen, was made up of high school players from Kaiser, Kalani, University, Moanalua, Punahou, Kailua and Hawaii Baptist.

Team members were: Chaz Hirata, Kelly Kamisato, Brandon Komata, Shane Komine, Seth Lee-Yee, Lane Matsuura, Brandon Moriki, Kevin Morikone, Dean Nikaido, Clinton Ogata, Ty Sakaguchi, Travis Sato, Ryan Scoville, Jonathan Torres, Jeff Yamamoto, Clinton Yamashita and Darin Yun.

The coaching staff included Shane Miyaji, Layton Matsumoto, Peter Wong and Carl Iwasaki.
