Census Bureau workers are making calls to follow up on surveys collecting information for various government agencies, but it is not possible to say whether your caller was one of them.
If you're telephoned again, ask for the caller's name and ID number and for a telephone number you can use to verify that the caller is employed by the Census Bureau. A number you can use to verify that someone is employed by and calling for the U.S. Census Bureau is 1-800-992-3529, said Ken Ellwanger, a program coordinator in California.
People making legitimate calls for an agency or organization should be willing to identify themselves and answer questions you may have. Unless you're certain of the caller's identity, do not give any information by telephone.
"I am a handicapped person and recently went to Longs Moiliili to shop. I was looking in my bag for a coin to obtain a shopping cart. Suddenly I realized I did not have my money bag. Just then a nice couple came past and asked if I needed assistence in freeing a cart."I explained my predicament and this nice gentleman popped a quarter in the machine and insisted I take the cart. Thank goodness. I was able to pay for my groceries with a credit card and did not have to make a trip home to get coins. In my flustered state, I neglected to get the names of the couple who helped me. I do want to thank them for coming to my aid. And, I want them to know I will try to return their kindness to someone else." - Mrs. Ho.
