
"He couldn't believe what was on his leg actually," Nathan Nanod said.
"He hit it several times."
The shark let go, and David Nanod caught a wave to shore.
Nanod, 19, was in satisfactory condition at Maui Memorial Hospital, after being treated for a large laceration.
Nanod was boogie boarding in waters off Ukali Road at about 3:55 p.m. yesterday when a shark believed to be 8 feet long bit him in the right calf, police said.
Warden George Fry, who has not been available for comment since the incident, left the facility yesterday, said Jack Crump, executive director of the Texas Jail Standards Commission.
"I have been advised Mr. Fry had been removed, based on the incident or items surrounding that incident."
The commission is conducting an investigation into the use of live rounds against the inmates and a new strip search policy that had been instituted over a week ago. A civil rights attorney here who represents some of the Hawaii inmates in Texas said earlier the policy was unconstitutional.
One Montana inmate suffered minor injuries.
He said plans call for the road to eventually remain open throughout the week.
The gates were put up on the Makua access road to prevent vehicular traffic in the area - site of a recent eviction of illegal campers - recent park improvements including the clearing of debris, tree removal and shrub trimming.

The woman told police she was approaching the Ala Wai Canoe Club site just after 4:30 a.m. when a man grabbed her from behind and and began assaulting her.
He removed her clothes and sexually assaulted her before carrying her to the water's edge and throwing her in, police said.
The woman was treated at Kapiolani Hospital.
The rapist was described as about 6 feet tall, weighing 200 pounds, with a muscular build.
He was bald and wore a red T-shirt, shorts and white basketball shoes.
At about 11:12 p.m., the rear end of the pickup struck Officer Myrna Spradley and catapulted her into the bed of the truck, police said.
Spradley, who suffered back and neck injuries and a concussion, was taken to Maui Memorial Hospital, where she was in fair condition in the emergency room, police said.
"She did not lose consciousness but was disoriented and confused," Sgt. Jayson Rego said.
Police arrested and charged David Boothby, 59, of Columbus, Ohio, with drunken driving. A breath test showed Boothby had nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his body, Rego said.
Boothby was released after posting $257 bail.
