Hawaiian Earth Products recycles yard trimmings,
easing the load of green waste headed for city landfills.

Earth-friendly soil compost
not just for pros

Homeowners can now buy locally made Menehune Magic compost and soil conditioner in bags at garden centers and nurseries, and do a good deed for Hawaii ecology.

"Hawaiian Earth Products Ltd. has been recycling yard trimmings into organic soil amendments for almost four years, but until recently, this material was only available in bulk (truck loads)," says Alan Gottlieb, company owner.

"Our main market was professional landscapers, nurseries, and homeowners who would come to our Campbell Industrial Park site with their pickup trucks for a cubic yard of our products or blends."

The new 1.5 cubic foot bag of organic compost with steer manure or the same size bag of organic soil conditioner are selling for about $5.

Hawaiian Earth Products are available at Ace Hardware, Koolau Farmers, Kahua Nursery, The Garden House, Kisco Store, and some of the Long's stores, he says.

Gottlieb takes the yard trimmings and saves valuable space in city's landfills.

Before Hawaiian Earth Products came along, more than 100,000 tons of green waste went into Oahu's landfills each year, says Gottlieb.

If you want to drop off green waste and help out the city, the company has six centers on Oahu.
