The right-hander signed a contract yesterday with the Houston Astros, who had made him the 19th pick of the first round in the June free- agent draft.
Terms of the signing were not announced, but it was reported earlier this week that he was offered a bonus in excess of $750,000. A Houston official said it was the largest bonus ever offered by the National League team.
There was some speculation that Johnson, who barely missed making the U.S. Olympic team, would rejoin the Rainbows for his senior season.
Last season, Johnson appeared in 17 games for UH and had a 6-5 record. He had 132 strikeouts and 40 walks in 119 innings pitched, with four complete games.
UH coach Les Murakami got some good news Monday when right-hander Andrew McNally, who left last year to play with the Australian National Team, enrolled for fall classes at the Manoa campus.
