Abubo upsets world contender
BIARRITZ, France - Hawaii's Megan Abubo advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Quiksilver Surfmasters meet yesterday when she defeated Pauline Menczer of Australia, 24.65 to 22.40.
It was a huge setback for Menczer, the only rival Lisa Anderson has for the Coca-Cola/ASP World Championship women's title.
Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard was knocked out by Melanie Redman.
In the men's division, Hawaii's Conan Hayes moved on to round three by ousting fellow Hawaii surfer Ross Williams.
WAHINE RANKED 12TH
The University of Hawaii women's cross-country team was ranked 12th in the Western Athletic Conference coaches poll released yesterday.
The Wahine received 80 points. Brigham Young received 13 of 16 first-place votes for 222 points, followed by Southern Methodist.
UHH MEETING
An informational meeting for University of Hawaii at Hilo students interested in playing for the women's tennis team will be held tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the athletic department classrooms. For more information, call Coach Craig Okuma at 933-3704.
TSUNAMI TIED
The Hawaii Tsunami, playing with the club's local players, were tied by the Hawaii Select team, featuring former Tsunami players, 2-2, last Saturday night at Ala Wai Field.
