Ho tops Slater for openers
BIARRITZ, France - Hawaii's Derek Ho won his opening heat against world champion Kelly Slater and French wild card Greg Pastusiak yesterday in clean, three-foot surf as the Quiksilver Surfmasters meet got started.
Ho moved into the third round with his 28.40-27.50 victory over Slater, who can still advance with a win in the second round.
The same is true for defending champion Sunny Garcia, also from Hawaii, who lost his first-round heat by less than a point to Australian Todd Prestage.
Other Hawaii surfers advancing to round three yesterday were Kaipo Jaquias and Kalani Robb.
In the women's division, Hawaii's Megan Abubo won her repechage heat and surfs against Pauline Menczer in the main event while Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard faces Australia's Melanie Redman.
WAHINE PICKED LAST
Southern Methodist and San Diego State have been picked to win the first Western Athletic Conference women's soccer Mountain and Pacific division titles, respectively.
The Hawaii women were picked to finish sixth (last) in the Pacific Division in voting by the coaches.
U.S. MID-AM QUALIFYING
Fifteen golfers will try to qualify for three spots in the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship tomorrow at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Among those entered are Keiki-Dawn Izumi and Lani Batey, who represented Hawaii in last year's tournament. The 1996 Mid-Amateur championship will be held next month at Mission Hills, Calif.
TURNEY, LUM IN WORLD MEET
At Lahti, Finland, Christina Turney of Kailua and Mahealani Lum of Honolulu were part of the women's four-person kayak (K-4) that finished fifth in the 500-meter final at the Flatwater Junior World Cup and Pre-World Championships last week.
Lum and Turney also finished seventh in the women's 500-meter double kayak final.
WEIGHTLIFTING CONTEST
There will be an Olympic weightlifting developmental meet Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Nuuanu YMCA. The contest serves as a qualifier for the 1997 Senior National Championships.
