Funk wants son
to hear Merv's words

GRAND Funk reunion: Former isle resident John Funk, who used to work at KGMB-TV, returns to Hawaii from his new home in Anaheim next week. He and wife Stevi are coming over to see the football game between Kailua High, his alma mater, and the Sunny Hills High Lancers on Aug. 30. He'll not be rooting for Kailua High, either, which probably won't go over big with ex-Kailua quarterback Russ Francis, now sports editor of KGMB. Funk will be rooting for Sunny Hills (which sounds like a rock singer) since his son, Grady John Keola Funk, plays wide receiver on the team. The 16-year-old junior attended Le Jardin School in Kailua until the Funks moved to California in 1985. The elder Funk didn't play high school football, but did play basketball for then coach Merv Lopes, who also coached wide receivers on the gridiron. He's trying to locate Lopes on the Big Isle now to see if his former coach can fly in for the game and maybe give the kid some pointers ...

THE Pepsi-Cola company is test-marketing a product in Philadelphia that has a Hawaiian flavor in its name at least. It's called Pepsi Kona. But since it contains 150 calories and is high in sodium, I don't look for it making a big dent in the soft drink market. No, it's not coffee flavored ... Did you see the police blotter story about the arrest of one Anthony Friday for robbery? It ended with a classic line: "Officers located Friday on Thursday..." With a name like Friday he should be an officer himself and specialize in dragnets ...

Don Ho
AFTER a night at the cinema, Gailene Holley and some professional soccer player pals stopped by Nick's Fishmarket and got to talking about "Joe's Apartment." One of the footies said he really liked the picture, but he was prejudiced because he's a big Don Ho fan. Suddenly a guy at the microphone starts singing "Tiny Bubbles," and the soccer player said that he didn't know there were Don Ho impersonators in Hawaii, but that there were a couple in Belgium who were really great. It took Gailene 15 minutes to convince Manny Catano and Ramon Raya that the singer was Don Ho ...

San Francisco treat?

FOLLOWERS of the S.F. restaurant scene may like to know that Larry Mindel, founder of the famous Il Fornaio chain, was dining in Sunset Grill with owners Dick & Monene Bradley the other night. Could Mindel be scouting a Honolulu location of his own? Mindel recently won the Catherine de Medici Award for being the American who best represents the food, wine and culture of Italy. Maybe, just maybe, an Il Fornaio will open in Honolulu soon ... Incidentally, Sean Kinoshita, new exec chef at Sunset Grill, comes to the job with impressive credentials in restaurants such as La Grenouille, Lespinasse and Park Avenue Cafe in N.Y.; Cypress Club, Silks at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Aqua in S.F.; and, most recently, A Pacific Cafe ...

NOT long ago Lisa Fulton was touring the Midwest and playing the role of Molly in the musical "Annie." Now it's the pits for Fulton. That is to say, she's part of the volunteer orchestra playing for the Army Community Theatre version of "Annie" opening Sept. 5 ... They've toted up the take and Mary Lou Brogan, chair of the Patriots Celebration at the Sheraton Waikiki, reports $165,000 was raised for the Hawaii Foodbank. She deemed it "excellent for a first fund-raiser." ... Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu is car-hunting, particularly for a vehicle someone would like to donate as a tax-deductible gift. Call them at 521-3811 ...

Katz up with Yuval

Yuval Katz
FLYING in today to play in the Emporio Armani Beach Volleyball Championships tomorrow and Sunday at Queen's Beach is former UH superstar Yuval Katz. Emporio Armani is hosting an open-to-the-public bash Monday for Yuval's 23rd birthday. Then it's off to Greece where Katz has signed to play volleyball professionally for a year, after which he hopes to return to Hawaii and a pro league with a team here. Sounds like he's caught Beach Fever ...
