UH honor student honorable in N.Y.
ANY New Yorker will tell you that the manager of stadium authorities at Shea Stadium could have been knocked over by the proverbial feather when he met UH student Sandi "Sam" Monteur. Sandi, a 24-year-old senior, was in the Big Apple attending a Mets game when she spotted a wad of money on the floor, a total of $223 in loose bills. Being the president of the Golden Key National Honor Society at UH, Sandi did what came naturally - the honorable thing - and handed it over to the stadium manager. He gave her a receipt for the money and later informed her it had been claimed by the Volunteer Ambulance Corps at the stadium. Enough people in the area had heard about her find that she doubts the authenticity of the volunteers' claim, but shrugs it off. Still ringing in Sandi's ears, however, is the advice from all those sitting around her: "Keep it!" ...
Kim Gennaula
THE Hawai'i Nature Center's "Night with Nature" takes place this weekend at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua with chef Patrick Callarec whipping out a little dinner for 400 guests. Among those attending is Bill Nye, known as TV's "Science Guy," seen locally on KHNL, the NBC outlet in Honolulu. Also representing the station at the event will be Dan Cooke, the "Weather Guy" as well an anchorman. Looking over the silent auction items, one caught his eye - a package offering the high bidder a chance to star as guest weather reporter on KGMB-TV with Kim Gennaula. He's wondering if he could simulcast the weather on both stations should he be high bidder. I wouldn't mind checking out highs and lows with her myself, but with my luck a cold front would sweep in ...
IT'S the end of August so naturally Good Old Professor Fun (a.k.a. Fred Ball) is doing his spring cleaning. He no longer needs the fold-up set he used on his kiddies show on Channel 13, "Keiki TV Pau," and is offering it to any aspiring entertainer who'd like to haul it away. Give him a call at 737-7279 ...
Strange badfellows
WHILE teammate Dennis Rodman is running around Rockefeller Center in a wedding gown, giving new meaning to being a Chicago Bull, Michael Jordan is blissing out in paradise, thinking more about golf than Rodman's book, "Bad As I Wanna Be." Jordan, who's only bad on the basketball court, would rather be good on the golf course. And, so he was when he jumped over to Lanai to form a new "Dream Team," consisting of Koele golf pro Marc Orlowski, Grand Wailea G.M. Greg Koesterling and Oahu resident Neal Tamashiro, who'll have plenty to tell his grandkids. Besides the Experi
ence at Koele, Jordan also played the Challenge at Manele before just barely catching the last ferry back to Lahaina - none of this Air Jordan stuff. Jordan told director of golf Gary Campbell that he'd be back: "I like the peaceful pace of the island and the lack of crowds." Just the opposite of what he gets in Chicago. And what Rodman gets wherever he goes ...
Fred Piluso
PLAYBOY photog Ken Honey knows one when he sees one - a honey, that is. When he was here earlier this year on a talent search at Scruples for Playboy centerfold prospects, his keen eye fell on two women whom Scruples owner Fred Piluso presented to him. Both Alesia Shevehenko and Carla Temple passed muster and will leave for L.A. in September and will be staying at the Playboy mansion while their shoots are being finalized ...
DIA is DOA
THE Downtown Improvement Association feels its work is done and hence is disbanding. A great many dramatic changes have taken place downtown since the DIA was founded in 1958, the year before statehood. For example, at the first annual DIA meeting, author James Michener was the guest speaker and the cost of the five-course luncheon at Wo Fat's was $1.25; the most recent luncheon tab was $20. Changes will continue downtown, but without the DIA as currently organized, according to the group's last president, Andy Friedlander ...
