Iolani tournament
struts top volleyball talent

The 14th Annual Iolani Girls' Invitational Volleyball Tournament - the sport's largest preseason prep event with 20 teams and some of the state's best players - starts tomorrow.

Farrington, last season's Oahu Interscholastic Association champion, returns to defend its tournament title.

Besides Farrington, the lineup includes state runner-up Punahou and OIA runner-up Roosevelt.

Also in the mix are Iolani, University High, Sacred Hearts, Aiea, Kahuku, Kaimuki, Kaiser, Kalani, McKinley, Moanalua, Pearl City, Waiakea, Laupahoehoe and Kapaa.

Also, three mainland teams will play, including Christian High School of El Cajon, Calif., which has won 11 league titles in a row.

Sara Kidd, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter for Christian, is being recruited by Missouri, Kansas and some other Division I programs.

Helix High School of San Diego is led by 6-4 junior middle blocker Alisa Proudfoot, and 5-10 senior setter Kim McCrary, a fourth-year varsity player. Helix was 14-11 last year in the Grossmont League.

College Prep of Oakland, Calif., is coached by Mid-Pacific alumnus Noel Remigio. The team (16-8) reached the finals of the North Coast Section tournament last year.

Punahou will be one of the strongest teams in the tournament, with 1995 ILH co-player of the year Lindsey Berg returning. She is a 5-9 junior setter/outside hitter.

Also returning for Punahou are all-star Tehani Miyashiro, a 5-7 senior outside hitter/setter, and Momi Kaaihue, a 5-8 senior middle blocker.

Farrington returns Jodie Chinen, a 5-5 senior setter, and talented 5-9 senior Kerrie Park, who hits opposite.

There are five 1995 OIA first-team all-stars in the tournament: Roosevelt's Aubrey Porter, Kaiser's Vanessa Tsukano, McKinley's Marjorie Nepo, Aiea's Kailey Reyes, and Moanalua's Shauntay Fletcher.

Other top OIA players to watch are Kahuku's Litiana Damuni, Roosevelt's Tiffany Okada and Pearl City's Morrysha Luis.

Iolani features fourth-year starter Tiffany Ahuna, a 5-7 senior outside hitter and middle blocker.

Five former University of Hawaii Wahine players will be serving as head coaches in the tournament.

The former Wahine are Kaimuki's Toni (Nishida) Chock, Iolani's Ann Kang, Radford's Waynette Mitchell, Pearl City's Stephanie Shota, and Punahou's Diana (McInerney) McKibbin.

Play starts at 9:45 a.m. with pool play and continues until the day's final game at 8:30 p.m. On Friday, teams will be in action at 12:30 p.m. and continue playing through 9 p.m. Consolation play begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday and championship play starts at 12:30 p.m.

Admission is $2.50 for adults, $1 for students. Children under 6 are admitted free of charge.
