Alice Taylor Glessner "touched a lot of lives here in the music world," says longtime friend Ann Crowe."She was a fabulous woman," Crowe said yesterday.
Glessner, managing director of Honolulu Symphony from 1966 to 1970, and again in 1974, also an acting general manager of Hawaii Opera Theatre in 1980, died Aug. 9 at her Escondido, Calif., home. She was 94.
Her earlier career included 12 years of managing the Los Angeles Philharmonic and four years of running the Greek Theater, an open-air cultural center in Los Angeles.
Educated in New York and Salzburg, Austria (where she studied piano), she took the Los Angeles Philharmonic on a tour of the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Okinawa, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan in 1956.
In the late 1960s, she said about her musical role here: "I consider myself enormously fortunate to be able to make my home in Hawaii and to have a part in the continuing growth and successful achievements of the Honolulu Symphony Society, the opera and the expansion of all music, in one of the most beautiful settings in the world."
Asked what makes a symphony run, she said, "It is the coordinated efforts of a strong sponsoring society, an orchestra which is striving to give the best possible performance, a conductor with musicianship, discipline and the right approach to his many-faceted job, efficient management and a community that values and enjoys its orchestra."
Her opera affiliation here included speaking on the technical aspects of producing the opera "Madame Butterfly" at the Kahala Mall in 1970.
Acquaintances described her as a dainty, feminine person with matchless tact and a ready wit.
She is survived by husband John Glessner, who was a longtime John Hancock Insurance Co. manager in Hawaii.
There will be no services.
Contributions may be made to Hawaii Opera Theatre.
