Hotel Lanai to get facelift

A chef from Maui will take over Lanai's first hotel on Sunday and renovate it. The hotel is to reopen Aug. 30.

The Hotel Lanai, consisting of the 10 original rooms and a cottage suite, has been leased to chef Henry Clay Richardson, a Hawaii resident since 1982, said owner Lanai Co.

Richardson, who will convert the restaurant into a new "Henry Clay's Rotisserie," has held a number of culinary positions in Hawaii, including executive chef at Kapalua Bay Hotel and Villas, chef de cuisine at David Paul's Lahaina Grill and, most recently, chef de cuisine at Gerard's Restaurant in Lahaina.

Richardson is from New Orleans and will incorporate cajun and creole dishes in the menus, said Tom Hoadley, executive vice president for Lanai Co.

The Hotel Lanai was built in 1923 by Dole Pineapple Co. founder Jim Dole to house important visitors to the island.

Lanai Co., part of Castle & Cooke Inc., also owns and operates Lanai's two luxury hotels, the 102-room Lodge at Koele and the 250-room Manele Bay Hotel.
