'Bows close stadium workout

Fred vonAppen is finally ready for a dress rehearsal.

The University of Hawaii football coach will hold it this Saturday morning at Aloha Stadium. It will be closed to the public.

"We'll have the headsets on with coaches in the press box," vonAppen said. "We will be substituting in and out, and we'll hopefully have some officials.

"We'll come back here after that and probably check out from Barbers Point. We may hold an afternoon practice and stay the night. It depends on how it goes."

The Rainbows may return to Aloha Stadium for another practice next week in preparation for the opener with Boston College.

VonAppen said the team will continue to work on fundamentals for the rest of the week. If the Rainbows improve dramatically, they may work on the game plan for Boston College.

"The coaching staff has already begun to prepare, but I'm not sure our guys are far enough along with the stuff we're teaching them," vonAppen said.

"I'd like to get started later in the week, but we may have to wait until we return to Cooke Field next Monday. After that, it will be wall-to-wall Boston College."

INJURY REPORT: Hawaii only had four players in the dreaded red rehabilitation jerseys.

Noticeably absent from that list was top defensive lineman Brian Chapman. He returned to practice yesterday for the first time since spraining his knee eight days ago.

The Oceanside, Calif., product made several big plays during the morning and afternoon workouts.

UH trainers said the four injured players are offensive guard Michael Petersen (shoulder), linebacker Mark Jenkins (knee), running back Jade Charles (Achilles' tendon) and linebacker Shane Gentis, who will have knee surgery and is out for the year.

"We're as healthy as we've been in a few days," vonAppen said. "The good news is, Petersen may be back with us in a few days."

TWO MORE LEAVE: Junior college transfers Bo Parks and Keith Parker left the program for personal reasons.

Parks, the son of former NFL player Billy Parks, played at Santa Monica (Calif.) City College last year. Parker attended Contra Costa (Calif.) Junior College.

Both were recruited as receivers by vonAppen's staff. They left the team last week.

"They left after only a couple of days," vonAppen said. "That's why we moved Jerimi Bourland and Johnny Macon to receiver. That's not unusual for JC guys to leave the team. They get homesick."

VonAppen said the two recruits were replaced on the fall camp roster by linebacker Jeremy Treskon and receiver Robert Ornellas.

"We can't sign anybody to replace those two guys," vonAppen said. "But we may be able to give those two scholarships to guys we think deserve it."
