Alexander, Villaver headline
proposed Hawaii-Japan card

A Hawaii vs. Japan fight card will be proposed to the Hawaii State Boxing Commission this week.

I Have A Dream Productions has tentatively scheduled eight bouts for Sept. 27 at Blaisdell Arena.

The main event would be Hawaii's Eric Alexander (11-6-1) vs. Fumitaka Okusa (8-4-0), of Tokyo, in a 154-pound fight scheduled for 10 rounds.

The co-main lists Erwin Villaver (12-7-1) vs. Tomonori Ohara (8-5-0) of Chita, in a 150-pound 10-rounder.

The six undercard fights are

Teddy Limoz Jr. (3-1-0) vs. Hiroshi Nishino (4-3-0), of Osaka, 146 pounds, six rounds; Tali Kulihaapai (3-0-0) vs. Akinobu Yanamura (4-0-0), of Nagoya, heavyweights, six rounds; John Lopez Jr. (2-2-0) vs. Naoyuki Ota, (6-6-0) of Yono, 140 pounds, six rounds; Xavier Cortez (1-2-0) vs. Takanori Takanami (8-2-0) of Akiishi, 154 pounds, six rounds; Eric Paulo (pro debut) vs. John Keyes (2-3-0) of Vallejo, Calif., heavyweights, six rounds; Donald Gonzalez (1-1-0) vs. Masayoshi Swada (0-1-0), of Osaka, 140 pounds, four rounds.

All fights are subject to commission approval.



STUBBLEFIELD SHOOTS 76

At North Plains, Ore., Larry Stubblefield of Kailua, shot a 76 yesterday in the first day of qualifying in the U.S. Amateur golf championship.

Michael Henderson, Raleigh, N.C., and Jeff Gilchrist, Elk Grove, Calif., led with opening-round 67s. Tiger Woods, who's trying for an unprecedented third consecutive title, carded a 69.

The top 64 scores after today's second round of stroke play will advance to match-play competition beginning tomorrow.



KALOLA NINTH

At St. Louis, Denise Kalola of Waianae jumped from 16th to ninth place yesterday with a pinfall total of 4,933 in the women's division after 24 games of the U.S. Amateur Bowling Championships.

Lucy Giovinco of Norcross, Ga., leads with a 5,172 total.



ANDERSEN SURFS TO TITLE

At Lacanau, France, world champion Lisa Andersen won the Gotcha Lacanau Pro surf meet women's title in four-foot waves yesterday.

Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard reached the finals by finishing second in her semifinal heat.

The men's competition started and Hawaii's Conan Hayes survived a first-heat matchup against world champion Kelly Slater.

Other Hawaii surfers advancing included Shane Dorian, Kaipo Jaquias, Sunny Garcia, Derek Ho and Kalani Robb.



HERSHEY TRACK

At Hershey, Pa., Natasha Kai of Kailua placed third in the girls' 13-14 age bracket 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 31 seconds during the North American Final of Hershey's Track & Field Youth Program this past weekend .

Mitzi Ing of the Iolani Track Club placed fifth in the girls' softball throw; Kahealani Migual of the Iolani T.C. placed sixth in the girls' long jump; Geoffrey Say of the Iolani T.C. placed seventh in the boys' softball toss, and Frederick Kaluna of Palolo placed eighth in the boys' softball throw in their respective age brackets.
