Exchange links materials
to those who need them

QUESTION: I have two large pieces of glass that I'd like to give to someone who could use them. The pieces are four feet by six feet and about 3/16th of an inch thick. Any suggestions on someone who would want them?

ANSWER: Why don't you try listing the glass with the Hawaii Materials Exchange (HIMEX)?

HIMEX is a kind of free trading post, managed by the Maui Recycling Group and funded by the state Department of Health and Maui County.

People who have things to give away list them with HIMEX and people who need things check in to see if any of the items they are want are available.

HIMEX doesn't have storage warehouses and never takes possession of the items, explained Carrie McCabe, state recycling coordinator. Instead the giver and the receiver make their own arrangements between them for the exchange. The intent is to make use of items that still are useful to someone and to reduce the amount of discarded stuff filling landfills.

For additional information on finding and listing items call 586-4240 on Oahu, 667-7744 or 579-9109 in Maui County, 246-8748 or 241-6860 on Kauai, or 329-2886 or 961-2676 on the Big Island.
