'Pagers' turn to isle talent

Hawaii has always been a hotbed of new talent in that most American of art forms, the comic story, but generally Hawaii artists have had to go to the mainland or Japan - or rely on the post office - to pursue their craft.

Now here's Eric M.H.H. Osaki's "Pagers" from No Talent Comics, a showcase for up-and coming Hawaii artists and writers.

The first issue features Osaki, Geno D. Aiu, Jon J. Murakami and Cheril Fukumoto, creating little alternate universes in pen and ink.

"There's a lot of talent out there, and this will give local people a chance to show off their stuff," said Osaki.

The book is what is known as an "ashcan comic," privately printed and distributed through comics-specialty store.

The next issue will be distributed through Diamond Comics on the mainland.

"We all have other jobs, but we put our hearts into the comics," said Osaki.

If sales improve, contributors will begin to make some royalties. In the meantime, the premiere issue is available at your neighborhood comic shop.
