Drought holds down
early mac-nut harvest

KA'U, Hawaii - Macadamia nut production on the Big Island dropped by about 2 million pounds for the harvest year ended June 30, the state's largest grower said yesterday.

Unusually dry weather helped keep the harvest down to 17.9 million pounds, said Jack Dymond, vice president of Mauna Loa Macadamia Partners.

Last year, the Ka'u orchards received only 40 percent of the normal precipitation, he said.

But the company expects better harvests for the rest of this year, when most harvesting takes place, because of heavy rains in January, Dymond said.

Company officials are optimistic that the price of macadamia nuts this year will hold at the 1995 level of about 55.5 cents per pound.
