Cervantes cited by NCAA

Dianna Cervantes, who runs cross country for the University of Hawaii, has been named the NCAA Woman of the Year state winner from Hawaii.

Cervantes, the Wahine team captain, has a 3.36 grade point average in business accounting. She placed third in the 5-kilometer race at last year's Big West Conference championship and was named to the all-conference team.

The award honors female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership. Ten finalists from the list of 51 will be announced later this month with the NCAA Woman of the Year will be named Oct. 6 at an awards dinner.



JONES TRIUMPHS

Dawson Jones of Pupukea won yesterday's North Shore Challenge paddleboard race, covering the 7-1/2 miles from Turtle Bay to Waimea Bay in one hour, two minutes and 20 seconds.

Runner-up in the open 16-foot paddleboard division was Buzzy Kerbox with a time of 1:06:11.

In the 12-foot paddleboard divisions, Gavin Sutherland took the men's title in 1:08:55 and Julie Speier was the first women's finisher in 1:28:00.



KALAOLA IN 16TH PLACE

At St. Louis, Denise Kalaola of Waianae is in 16th place in the women's division of the U.S. Amateur Bowling Championships with a total pinfall of 3,244 after completion of 16 rounds yesterday

The women's leader is Lucy Giovinco, Norcross, Ga., with a pinfall of 3,522.



SAN FRANCISCO PREVAILS

Sean McLeod scored three goals to lead the San Francisco Polo Club to a 6-1 victory over the Honolulu Polo Club in yesterday's feature match at the Waimanalo Polo Grounds.

In a schooling game, Emperor Kunihiko defeated International Travel Services, 5-2, with Ricardo Villegas scoring three goals.



SARDINHA POWERS USA

At Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, Dane Sardinha belted a three-run homer in the third inning to start the United States to a 5-2 victory over South Korea in the bronze-medal game of the International Baseball Association's AAA Junior World Championships last Friday. Sardinha, a senior-to-be at Kamehameha Schools, also had a double.

The Americans finished their summer tour with a 14-1 overall record, 6-1 in the tournament.



SPORTS TALK SHOW

A new radio sports talk show debuts today on KCCN 1420-AM. Rainbow Sports Radio airs weekdays from 4-6 p.m. The program combines live local and national sports reports, updated sports scores and news, and listener call-ins.

WAHINE SOCCER OPENS

Fall camp began last week for the University of Hawaii women's soccer team.

Third-year coach Pinsoom Tenzing had 34 prospective players in attendance - 18 veterans, three recruits and 13 walk-ons.

The first intrasquad scrimmage is tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. on the grass field next to the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
