
The Ka'imimoana (Ocean Seeker) is the newest addition to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's fleet.
A traditional Hawaiian blessing is planned at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Pier 9. The public is invited to tour the 224-foot ship during open house from 1 to 4 p.m.
The Ka'imimoana formerly was a navy vessel used to listen for submarines, said Commander Craig Bailey, the ship's executive officer.
It was converted to an NOAA oceanographic ship and commissioned into its fleet May 1.
Construction of a fourth lane for the steep, three-lane grade serving Maui's fast-growing Upcountry region was to have started late this year. But replacing the concrete "Jersey" barrier with a preferred grassy medial strip could set the work back enough to imperil funding for the $13.3 million project.
Staff Sgt. Carson L. Allen Jr., 31, an imagery interpretation specialist with Marine Forces Pacific headquarters is being held at Naval Brig, Pearl Harbor, on suspicion of aggravated assault pending completion of the investigation.
Allen was taken into custody Friday in the alleged Aug. 8 assault at his home at the Manana Housing Area of Pearl City.

Police said Scott Torrellas of Hanapouli Circle in Ewa Beach was charged with three counts of first degree sexual assault.
Police said the couple was at the shopping complex at about 10:30 a.m. when Torrellas took his wife into a men's bathroom, choked her unconscious, and began to sexually assault her.
Police said Torrellas was interrupted by someone in the bathroom and took his wife to another bathroom where he raped her a third time. His wife later called police, who arrested Torrellas. He remains in custody.
Police said four men, one armed with a handgun, accosted a station attendant and robbed him at about 1:15 a.m.
The men, dressed in black clothing, fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.
Police arrested a juvenile male at the 56-565 Kamehameha Highway station.
