Little Leaguers in title game
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Hawaii, representing USA West, battled out of the losers' bracket yesterday to advance to tonight's USA Division championship game of the Little League Big League (16-18 year olds) World Series.
Hawaii beat Chicago (USA North), 10-3, and plays Chicago again tonight for the right to meet Chinese Taipei tomorrow in the World Series title showdown.
Kealii Lum had three RBIs and Sean Alejo, Michael Cesar and Mark Okano eached knocked in two runs to spark Hawaii.
Reliever Ikaika Baptista pitched four innings of shutout ball to earn the victory.
AUSTRALIAN TEAM LEADS HIBT
At Kailua-Kona, the Game Fishing Club of Southern Australia took the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament lead yesterday.
A tag and release by angler Bill Coombs gave the Australians 1,200 points after four days of fishing. Hawaii's Fun Birds of Aloha are second with 1,055 points.
David Robinson of New Zealand's Ngawi Sports Fishing Club had the largest catch of the day, a 344-pound Pacific blue marlin.
BLACK POSTS 3-0 RECORD
At Boca Raton, Fla., Tyler Black of Kaneohe has won his first three round-robin matches in the Boys' 12 Division of the United States Tennis Association Challenge Cup. Black beat Johnny Sweeney of Leawood, Kan., 7-5, 6-2; Brett McKeon of Boca Raton, 6-2, 6-2, and Nate Maher of New Orleans, 6-3, 6-2.
HAWAII SURFERS ADVANCE
The Zeal Optics U.S. Amateur Surfing Championships continued at Sandy Beach yesterday.
Hawaii surfers advancing were Josh Wills and Jason Bartels in the boys' division, Paul Cooper and Eugene Texiera in the junior division and Edwin Nakazato, Stanton Oshiro and Ash Cottler in the men's division.
The finals are tomorrow at Ala Moana Bowl starting at 7 a.m.
TEXAS STOPS AIEA
At Taylor, Mich., in a battle of unbeaten teams, Spring (Texas) defeated Aiea, 4-1, yesterday in the Little League Junior League (13 year olds) World Series.
Hawaii (2-1) plays the Indiana-Mexico winner today in the double-elimination tournament.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL DOUBLES
There will be a beach volleyball doubles tournament at the Queen's Surf Beach Sand Box tomorrow for men's A and Sunday for men's AA.
