New Rainbows head coach Fred vonAppen goes off on a 15-minute dissertation at the mention of the words two deep, and not much of it is printable in a family paper.
But supposedly the long overdue depth chart will be unveiled before tomorrow morning's practice - at least to the players and vonAppen's assistants.
Everyone else will probably have to guess who will start against Boston College two Saturdays from now at Aloha Stadium, and that's the way vonAppen seems to like it.
"We don't have any controversies because nobody knows anything," vonAppen said. "But the minute it's published in the newspaper who the No. 1 guy is at quarterback, and suddenly you have a controversy.
"We know this much - we're going to start 11 guys on offense and defense against Boston College. We have a good idea who those 22 are going to be, but I don't want it to be disruptive to what we're trying to get done."
Part of the problem of having a depth chart etched in stone is the unevenness that plagues Hawaii on both sides of the football.
During yesterday's spirited afternoon workout, the offense and defense had their moments. Unfortunately for the UH coaches, they had some downside as well.
"I think we're in pretty good shape with our attitude and our conditioning, I'm pleasantly surprised there," vonAppen said. "But we still have so many miles to go.
"We're just so inconsistent. We make a sterling play one minute, and then we fall down all over ourselves the next. We're too streaky on both sides of the ball."
One way to smooth over some of these rough spots is to have scrimmages that parody game-like situations. Unfortunately for the Rainbows, they're a little thin up front on offense and defense.
Despite that fact, look for Hawaii to scrimmage tomorrow in its first day in full pads.
"We definitely need it, but we do it with some trepidation," vonAppen said. "If we do, it will be situational. We just don't have enough bodies in the trenches to hold a regular scrimmage.
"The field is also less than ideal in several places. The surface is too soft in those spots, so we have to be careful what we do in order to avoid unnecessary injuries."
There were a few more people wearing the red rehabilitation jersey yesterday, with the most serious being Brian Chapman.
He has a muscle strain and a sprained knee, and is listed as day-to-day. It's likely the junior defensive lineman from Oceanside, Calif., will miss the remainder of fall camp.
True freshman Jerimi Bourland also was in red. Recruited as a quarterback, the Texan has spent most of fall camp at wide receiver. Apparently several hard hits left him a little sore all over.
"I'm sure that once we're in full pads, we'll have a lot more guys on the sidelines," vonAppen said. "But so far, we're in good shape."
That's somewhat surprising when considering how much contact the Rainbows have had the past few days. Despite being in shells (shoulder pads and shorts), the offense and defense traded heavy blows during a variety of situational drills.
Running backs Jade Charles, Tony Thomas and Carlos Shaw broke off some good runs, while Calvin Mims hit the hole hard inside. Freshmen quarterbacks Josh Skinner and John Gurasich shared the spotlight almost as much as returning starters Glenn Freitas and Johnny Macon.
UH offensive coordinator Guy Benjamin said he would narrow the field to two quarterbacks tomorrow in order for that pair to concentrate on the upcoming opener with Boston College.
"We can't have five guys trying to share in the reps," Benjamin said. "We aren't prepared to name a starter, but we will have two guys getting most of the work.
"Johnny has his moments, but his lack of size hurts him in this offense. Glenn continues to show a lot of poise on the field and John has a lot of potential.
"The problem is he's still just a freshman, and is a little overwhelmed by it all. Once he learns the terminology, I feel like he can help us."
