Dogs are not supposed to
run free on the beach

QUESTION: Between 5 and 6 p.m. two large dogs have begun to monopolize Queen's Surf beach. They are unleashed and are encouraged by their masters to run around, retrieve items from the water, cavort on the sand and bark. Is this legal?

It is disconcerting to swim along with these dogs. This is the first time I've been bothered by dogs in the 30 or more years I've been swimming there.

ANSWER: No, this is not legal. Dogs are not allowed anywhere on Hawaii's world-famous beach in Waikiki. This is to protect tourists and residents from the very aggressive dog dung flies, finding dog feces in the sand or being sprayed with sand kicked up by dogs cavorting on the beach.

Hawaii has a leash law, and dog owners also could be cited for allowing their dogs to run free. Generally, dogs must be leashed unless they are on their owner's property.

Call police when you see the dogs running free at Queen's Surf.
