Heat blamed for H-3 collapse

Thermal expansion of one of the girders holding up a 120-foot concrete section of the H-3 freeway caused the beam to buckle on the morning of July 27, the project's contractor says.

Kiewit Pacific Co. said yesterday that heat caused one girder to bow out, hitting another girder, which triggered a "domino effect."

Three additional girders then collapsed and the section of freeway fell, injuring four workers.

State Transportation Director Kazu Hayashida said construction of the freeway is expected to resume shortly in North Halawa Valley after it was halted for more than two weeks.

The controversial $1.37 billion highway project, which runs from Pearl Harbor to Marine Corps Base, Hawaii, in Kaneohe, has claimed two lives to date.

Slaying of Big Isle youth mystifies
family, friends

KEAAU, Hawaii - Glenn Guerrero was so quiet and modest that he didn't even tell his family when he made the honor roll in his senior year at Waiakea High School.

He also didn't tell them who he was meeting Monday afternoon, when his body was found with a gunshot wound to the head at the edge of a gravel road near the Keaau athletic park.

Police say they have made little progress in learning who shot and killed Guerrero, 17. No motive for the killing was immediately apparent.

Mexicans caught in cocaine bust

The arrest of three illegal immigrants and seizure of 12 pounds of cocaine with a street value of $500,000 to $600,000 confirms what local drug enforcement officials have been saying.

"That Mexicans are heavily involved in drug trafficking in the state" and have been for the last several years, said Maj. Michael Carvalho, head of the Honolulu Police Department's Narcotics/Vice Division. And they haven't limited themselves to cocaine, but also are trafficking in methamphetamines, black tar heroin and marijuana, he said.

Three men arrested Friday at Honolulu Airport face a minimum mandatory of 10 years in a federal prison if convicted. Jose Rodolfo Ayon-Meza, 26, his brother Alcadio Ayon-Meza, 23, and Guillermo Barrera-Galvan, 31, are charged with conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 5 grams or more of cocaine.
