Duke Kahanamoku
grants announced

Four athletes and one organization have been named recipients of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation quarterly grants for August.

Individual grants went to:

Bara Merino, $750, to attend the AAU-USA 11-year-old baseball all-star competition in Des Moines, Iowa; Macy Mullen, $500, to compete in October's World Amateur Team surf meet at Huntington Beach, Calif.; Raymond Reichie, $500, to attend the National Scholastic Surfing Association's national championship in California; and Harry Sombelon III, $500, to compete in the USA Cup soccer tournament in Minneapolis.

Holo Kaukahi was given $1,000 to help defray expenses from its recent trip to the Boat Festival in Brest, France. Nine paddlers and supporters attended last month's event that drew representatives from over 50 nations. The group's koa canoe remains in France.

KOP QUALIFIES IN PLAYOFF

Wendell Kop defeated Forest Watson on the first sudden-death playoff hole yesterday to win Hawaii's lone spot in the United States Senior Amateur Sectional Qualifying tournament at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Kop and Watson tied for first after 18 holes with 76s.

Watson is the first alternate. Other alternated are George Yamamoto (77), Fred Zane (77) and Hiroshi Miyamoto (78).



JAPAN TEAM LEADS HIBT

At Kailua-Kona, the Japan Kenken team landed a 358-pound Pacific blue marlin to take the lead going into today's second day of the 38th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.

The catch by Yoshinori Takano gave Japan Kenken 547 points, putting the team 156 points ahead of the Balboa (Calif.) Angling Club. Japan's Sanriku Granders Fishing Club was third with 300 points.

In the ahi category, Takaaki Ushimura boated a 118-pounder to give the Mauna Kea Sports Fishing Club of Japan 157 points.

There were 17 marlin catches reported yesterday, 13 of which were tagged and released.



McLACHLIN TIED FOR SEVENTH

At Columbus, Ind., Parker McLachlin of Honolulu shot a 71 yesterday for a 54-hole total of 216 and a two-way tie for seventh place in the 28th annual Independent Insurance Agent Junior Golf Classic.

Jeremy Wilkinson of South Bend, Ind., is the leader at 207.

Ryan Koshi of Wailuku is in a seven-way tie for 20th place at 223 and Honolulu's Geoff Nuwash is in a five-way tie for 44th place.

The tournament ends today.



USA TOPS SOUTH KOREA

At Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, the United States improved to 3-0 in the Junior World Baseball Championships, beating South Korea, 3-1, Sunday.

Iolani's Keoni DeRenne opened with game for the Americans with a walk, was sacrificed to second and took third on a single by Michael Cuddyer.

Tim Drew singled DeRenne home and a two-out single by Kamehameha's Dane Sardinha scored Cuddyer for a 2-0 lead.



MILLER PITCHES SHUTOUT

At San Bernardino, Calif., Jherell Miller scattered seven hits and struck out seven in pitching Pearl City to a 1-0 victory over Washington yesterday in the Little League Western Regional for 11-12 year olds.

Pearl City scored its run in the top of the fifth inning on singles by Tyler Perkins, Jay Egusa and Shane Briones.

Pearl City plays Southern California tonight in a championship bracket game. The winner advances to Friday's championship game. The loser plays an elimination game Thursday.



CHICAGO BLANKS HAWAII

At Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Chicago held Hawaii to one hit in a 13-0 win in the Little League Big League (16-18 years) World Series yesterday.

Hawaii plays host Broward County in an elimination game tomorrow. Hawaii opened the World Series with a 5-3 victory over Broward County Saturday.



HAWAII FINISHES SIXTH

At Lodi, Calif., the Hawaii team in the American Softball Association Fast-Pitch West Regional placed sixth out of 27 teams Saturday with a 3-2 tournament record.



SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Zeal Optics United States Amateur Surfing Championships began yesterday off Diamond Head and continue today at Kewalo Basin Park.

Tomorrow the action moves to Kuhio Beach, then Sandy Beach Thursday. The semifinals and finals will be at Ala Moana Bowl Friday and Saturday.

Surfing begins at 7 a.m. daily.



SAND VOLLEYBALL CHALLENGE

The second Sand Volleyball Challenge of the summer will be held at Pearl Harbor's Wentworth Sand Volleyball Courts, Saturday and Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. each day.

The public event is open to two-person, four-person and coed teams in A, BB and B divisions.
