Leano, who didn't participate in spring drills, was one of the top local recruits coming out of Campbell High in 1995. As a freshman last year, he had 17 tackles in nine games. Harris, a junior linebacker from Columbus, Ohio, finished with five tackles in eight games.
Rainbows head coach Fred vonAppen said that all the comings and goings reminded him of transactions in the National Football League.
Over the last few days, the Rainbows have lost Harris, Leano, Gavin Hess and Sione Fuluvaka to grades. They also released running back Ace Riggins in the spring because of blood clots, and recently allowed freshman Daniel Ho-Ching to redshirt this year as he continues his year-long battle with cancer.
VonAppen wasn't ready to release their names until all avenues have been exhausted, but the Rainbows apparently lost two incoming freshmen to the NCAA clearing house.
They will be replaced by recent signees Rickey Lumford of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, and Matt Paul of Anaheim, Calif.
VonAppen said the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Paul will play linebacker.
Lumford played quarterback in high school, but will play defensive back. He's a 5-9, 175-pounder who vonAppen said has decent speed.
The remaining 23 incoming freshmen and junior college transfers are due today. They'll work out at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at Cooke Field.
Varsity players are due in Sunday when the Rainbows leave for camp at Barbers Point.
The first practice will be Monday at 8:15 a.m. Practices are open, but fans must check in at the gate.
"People ask me how much impact will the newcomers have, but I can't really answer that until I see them," vonAppen said. "They know they have a chance to play.
"In fact, this is as clean a start as any class can have. We don't have any starters back. Those guys started for (former coach) Bob (Wagner) and Bob is gone. I hope I don't offend any of our guys, ... but in reality, the slate is clean.
"We'll probably redshirt some guys, especially at quarterback," vonAppen said. "That's really the only position where a true freshman doesn't actually have a chance to start right away. We'll have six quarterbacks in camp.
"The three at the top of the chart are obviously Glenn Freitas, Johnny Macon and Hunter Young. One of the three new quarterbacks will probably get a chance to play this year, with the other two guys redshirting.
"Just which one of the three (Jerimi Bourland, John Gurasich and Josh Skinner) is precocious enough to catch our eye is something we'll have to wait and see over the next few days."
