Movers hosting
international tournament

The annual Hawaii International Baseball Championship, featuring teams from Japan, South Korea and Alaska and the Hawaii Island Movers, opens tomorrow with four games at Rainbow Stadium.

Visiting teams this year are the Anchorage Bucs and Fairbanks Goldpanners, regular-season Alaska League opponents of the Island Movers, and South Korea's Inha University and Japan's Kansai College All-Stars and Hiroshima College All-Stars.

There are four games tomorrow, Thursday and Friday starting at 10 a.m., 1, 4 and 7 p.m. The first of three Saturday games is at 11 a.m.

Sunday's semifinals start at noon and 3 p.m. The winners play for the championship at 6 p.m.

Admission each day, for the entire day, is $3. For further information, call 848-5203.

In last night's Alaska League game, the Bucs pounded the Movers, 14-5.



ISHII LEADS AT MAUNA KEA

David Ishii shot a 4-under-par 68 to take a three-stroke lead going into today's second round of the AT&T Aloha Section PGA Stroke-Play Championship at the Mauna Kea Beach Course.

In second place with a 71 was David Chin, an assistant pro at the Navy-Marine Course. Tied for third at 73 were host pro Joe Root and Kapalua's Dick McClean. The 54-hole tournament ends tomorrow.

Besides the $2,500 top purse, the winner gets an exemption to the 1997 Hawaiian Open and the PGA Golf Professional Championship, Sept. 26-29 at La Quinta, Calif.



STUBBLEFIELD QUALIFIES

Larry Stubblefield of Kailua won the lone spot in the United States Amateur Championship sectional qualifying golf tournament at the Pearl Country Club yesterday. He shot even-par (73-71) 144.

The 96th U.S. Amateur is at Cornelius, Ore., Aug. 20-25.

Alternates include James Seki Jr. (148), Damien Jamila (149) and Shigeru Matsui (150).



KANAEHOLO HITS GAME-WINNER

Missoula, Mont., Kalei Kanaeholo hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Kaneohe to a 3-1 victory over Peach Bowl (Calif.) in the opening round of the Little League Senior League (14 year olds) Western Regional baseball tourney yesterday.

Matt Ramie pitched a complete game, allowing five hits, striking out eight and walking three.

Kaneohe plays Thousand Oaks (Calif.) today.



AIEA ROMPS

Phoenix, Casey Onaga pitched five innings of no-hit ball and Aiea blasted Bull Head City (Ariz.), 15-0, in the Little League Junior League (13 year olds) Western Regional baseball tournament championship bracket yesterday.

Travis Watanabe was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Matt Hisaka had two RBIs for Aiea.

The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Aiea can reach Thursday's championship game with a win today over Union City (Calif.).



HAWAII WINS OPENER

Omaha, Neb., Jason Peters scattered six hits and Brad Takamori knocked in four runs as Hawaii defeated Oklahoma, 11-3, in its opening game at the Continental Amateur Baseball Association World Series for 12 year olds.



HAWAII UNDEFEATED

Charles City, Iowa, the Hawaii Rainbows have advanced to the championship bracket of the Continental Amateur Baseball Association World Series for 9 year olds.

Hawaii was 5-0 in pool play and opens championship-bracket competition tomorrow.



AAU TITLE FOR HAWAII

At West Des Moines, Iowa, the Hawaii Warriors posted a 9-1 record and won the National AAU baseball tournament for 11 year olds Saturday.

Hawaii defeated Spring, Texas, 3-0, in the championship game.

Team members are Travis Canonizado, Brandon Ishii, Dallas Kia, Cameron Kugiya, Casey Lee, Ikaika Lee, Brandon Massey, Tyler McCready, Baba Merino, Bert Mitsunaga, Jeffrey Mizokawa, Cid Moses Jr. and Spencer Nakamura.

McCready was selected co-Most Valuable Player and was named to the all-tournament team along with Kia, Casey Lee and Massey.
