Ticket waiver? Chances
slim but give airline a call
QUESTION: My wife purchased a Northwest Airlines regular excursion ticket for travel to the mainland. She got sick after she'd paid for it and will not be able to make the trip. She'd like to have one of her sisters use the ticket instead. What we're told on Kauai is "no way" can anyone else use that ticket, and if my wife would be able to use the ticket later this year, she'd have to pay an extra fee for the change in the date.
It doesn't seem fair that her sister cannot use the ticket. It is not a coupon or discount ticket. What can we do?
ANSWER: If you're willing to gamble a long-distance call, telephone Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis by dialing 1-612-726-2046 and ask for extension 3 for the customer action desk or extension 4 for the customer relations service. A spokeswoman said that if a special waiver is possible, it would need to come from one of those sections based on details of the situation provided by you. Those waivers are very rare.
If your wife thinks she can use the ticket later, Northwest's standard charge is $50 for making changes.
