Au advances to quarterfinals
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Elisha Au of Waikoloa on the Big Island won both of her matches yesterday in the 48th U.S. Girls' Junior Golf Championship to advance to today's quarterfinal round.
Au defeated Illinois' Emily Gilley, 6 and 4, in the first round of match play, then beat Nevada's Ashlei Pendleton, 2-up.
Anna Umemura of Honolulu won her first-round match over California's Anne Lee, 1-up, but lost to Taya Battistella of Richland, Wash., 1-up, in the second round.
ABUBO IN, BALLARD OUT
At Huntington Beach, Calif., Hawaii's Megan Abubo advanced to the semifinal round of the AirTouch Pro surfing meet yesterday.
Abubo scored 15.14 points to finish second in her quarterfinal heat behind Australian Kate Skarrat (16.74).
The heat's big surprise was the elimination of Lisa Anderson (14.53), the reigning world champion and current Coca-Cola/ASP World Tour ratings leader.
Also yesterday, Hawaii's Roch-elle Ballard, ninth in the world, lost in the quarterfinals.
HAWAII TIED FOR FIRST
At Vancouver, British Columbia, Parker McLachlin's 144 helped Hawaii into a first-place tie with New Mexico and Northern California after two rounds of the Junior America's Cup golf tournament.
Hawaii's team total is 449.
McLachlin is second in the individual race behind New Mexico's Scott Lieberwirth (142).
Also participating for Hawaii are Jim Seki, Jr. (152), Chen Ponce (159) and Shane Hoshino (160).
CHAMPIONS FROM HAWAII
At Boise, Idaho, Michael Cezar pitched the first five innings and Chad Kamakura hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to pace Hawaii in the championship game of the Little League Big League (16-18 years) Western Divisional tournament yesterday.
Hawaii defeated Washington, 11-6, to advance to the Regional in San Jose, Calif., starting Saturday.
Ikaika Baptista went 4-for-4 while James Okano and Kurt Suma each had two hits for Hawaii.
KANEOHE WINS TITLE
At Salem, Ore., Kyle Colunga pitched a six-hitter to lead Kaneohe to a 7-4 victory over East Boise (Idaho) in the championship game of the Little League Senior League (13-15 years) divisional tournament.
Boyd Taniguchi, Matt Ramie and Colunga all had two hits.
Kaneohe advances to the Western Regional at Missoula, Mont.
DERENNE HAS THREE HITS
At Joplin, Mo., Keoni DeRenne (Iolani School) led the USA Baseball Junior Team to a 9-3 victory over Canada last night with three hits.
PEARL CITY TRIUMPHS
Pearl City rode a six-run third inning to a 6-3 victory over Kailua American in the championship game of the Little League Major League (11-12 years) state tournament at Pearl Harbor's Lynch Field yesterday.
Winning pitcher Shane Briones allowed just three hits and Chad Aranita hit a three-run homer.
Pearl City goes to San Bernardino, Calif., for the Western Regional starting Aug. 8.
DAVIS SECOND
Joan Davis, a masters runner with Honolulu's Faerber's Flyers, finished second in the Sri Chinmoy Running Festival Half-Marathon Race Walk at Melbourne, Australia, May 26.
