City gives $50 rebate
for ultra-low-flush toilet

QUESTION: Is there still some kind of rebate or tax break for homeowners who change their toilets and install the ones that take less water? Where do we file?

ANSWER: Yes. Honolulu offers a rebate for switching to the ultra-low-flush toilets. The rebate is $50 between July 1, 1996, and June 30, 1997. For those who made the change earlier, the rebate was $100.

The installation must be done by a licensed plumbing contractor, said Raymond Len, mechanical engineer in charge of the plumbing code section of the city Building Department.

Rebate application forms may be obtained at a satellite city hall or at the city Building Department on the ground floor of the Municipal Office Building, 650 S. King St.

To get an application form by mail, write to: City Building Department, Permit Issuance Unit, 650 S. King St., Honolulu 96813. Include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for the application to be mailed back to you.

The completed rebate application must be signed by the contractor, and include a copy of the building permit or approved building permit application, and copies of receipts or paid invoices. The completed application may be dropped off or mailed to Rebate, Public Works Fiscal Section, Fourth Floor Honolulu Municipal Office Building, 650 S. King St., Honolulu 96813.

The ultra-low-flush toilets use 1.6 gallons of water per flush.
