Harris top powerlifter

Anthony Harris of Kaneohe, representing the 24-Hour Fitness Hawaii Power Team, won the 220-pound class title in the United States Powerlifting Federation's Senior National Championships at Philadelphia recently.

Harris lifted a total of 1,923 pounds in three power lifts - squat, bench press and dead lift.

He will represent the United States at the International Powerlifting Federation's World Championships in Austria in November.

Derek Ho of Honolulu twice attempted to better the IPF world record in the bench press in the 165-pound class, but missed on a technicality. He will try again as a member of Team USA at the World Bench Press Championships in Denmark in December.



AU TIED FOR 16TH PLACE

At Sioux Falls, S.D., Elisha Au of Waikoloa on the Big Island was in a five-way tie for 16th place yesterday after the second round of the 48th U.S. Girls' Junior Golf Championship.

South Carolina's Reilley Rankin was the leader with a 139.

Au had rounds of 73 and 75 for a 148 total. Further back was Anna Umemura of Honolulu at 152.



KANEOHE-KAHALUU WINS

At Gresham, Ore., Kau'i Salzman scattered seven hits in pitching Kaneohe-Kahaluu to a 5-3 victory over East Boise (Idaho) in a consolation bracket game of the Little League Major (11-12 years) Division I softball tournament yesterday.

Kapua Kobashigawa-Goings is 10-for-14 in the tournament.

Kaneohe-Kahaluu plays a loser-out game today.



CABA TEAM ROSTER

The Hawaii Rainbows will compete in the Continental Amateur Baseball Association World Series for 9- year-olds starting tomorrow.

Team members are Cody Barrett, Michael Chock, Michael Kealoha, Jacob Mellor, Niles Nakama, Reyn Ohye, David Parrow Jr., Preston Pires, Donovan Solomon, Jon Takamura and Kelii Zablan.

The coaches are Eric Takamura, Mark Mellor, David Parrow and Cyril Pires.



ASA GIRLS TO COMPETE

The Pearl City Pearls, the ASA Girls 12-and-under state champions, will play in the PAL Invitational at Santa Clara, Calif. starting Friday. and the Area B Championships in Lodi, Calif., Aug. 8-11.

The players are Jessieca Corpuz, Natalie Fujimoto, Jasmine Kapesi, Kristen Kimoto, Tracie Koide, Kristin Lai, Loihi

McKeague, Dani Mosier, Chelsey Ruth, Talia Ruth, Jaime Shibata and Jenna Skedeleski.

The coaches are Alan Ishida, Dale Ohama and Pat Oki.



RIGGERS BEACH VOLLEYBALL

The ninth annual Riggers Beach Volleyball Tournament for men's doubles teams will be held Aug. 10-11 starting at 9 a.m. each day at Queen's Beach. For information or to register, call 848-0947.



YUEN TO NATIONALS

Nick Yuen will represent Hawaii in the American Darts Organization's national youth finals at Las Vegas starting Aug. 16.

Yuen earned the Region 2-1 berth by going undefeated in a round-robin, steel-tip competition with three other regional finalists at Brandy's Grill July 13.

About 20 other darts competitors from Hawaii will be in Las Vegas the weekend of Aug. 16-18 for the National 501 Singles Championship, the $45,000 North American Open and other events.

Willy Wong and Jeanine Colbert will represent Hawaii in the ADO's East-West All-Star event.



HPU SOCCER TRYOUTS

Hawaii Pacific University's women's soccer coaches, Mark and Alexis Kane, will hold tryouts for the 1996 Sea Warriors Aug. 15-16 at HPU's Windward Campus.
