You Make The Call

Some responses to our last call-in question:

"How would you rate NBC's coverage of the Summer Olympics so far and why?"

J.C. Carson, Nuuanu: "The coverage has been pathetic. Are these announcers getting paid by the word? Particularly in gymnastics! Give us a chance to watch the routines. Good coverage on the rowing, because they keep their mouths shut. Summer Sanders - somebody ought to tell her to simmer down and quit screaming into the microphone. Much better when ABC used to cover it."

Paul Pareta, Punahou: "NBC's doing a good job. Costas is a balanced mediator. But the Olympics have gotten far, far too large for any one network to adequately serve all of the sports. I think the answer is to put the Olympics back to the original five or six events, stick it in Athens and leave it there, where it started."

Jason Placido, Kalihi: "The coverage is not so good. They only show certain parts of the sports. I'd rather see more basketball. Have a channel for each sport."

Lisa Collins, Honolulu: "The coverage is really good, except that they didn't focus on New Zealand in the opening ceremonies, and that's where I'm from."

Travis Yoshinaga, Manoa: "I give the coverage an eight on a scale of one to 10. They only show a little bit of basketball and volleyball, but the gymnastics and swimming coverage is A-plus work."

Donna Yee, McCully: "I'd give it about a seven on a scale of one to 10. I'm most interested in the gymnastics, and the coverage is only on the Americans. The coverage is biased. I think ESPN would probably be better. And CBS does a better job with the Winter Olympics. They give a wider variety."

Ron Jongeward, Waikiki: "The people doing the coverage are great, especially Bob Costas and Jim Lampley. But I resent that they're not showing a lot of different sports. For instance, on Sunday we had five hours of little girls jumping around, and on the same day six American boxers won bouts. They showed one round of one bout."

Lori Lamud, Hawaii Kai: "The coverage isn't that great. The Olympics is supposed to be a showcase of a myriad of events. They don't show all the different things people are doing there."

Irish Ritchey, Maunawili: "The worst I've ever seen. They've gone overboard glorifying the commentators. They've done only sporadic coverage of the athletes themselves. We're deluged with the commentators' pompous attitudes. They treat the athletes rudely."

Donna Cadiente, Waipahu: "It's the greatest - especially the women's gymnastics. They make you feel close to the athletes and want to root for them, no matter what country they come from."

Cathy Westlake, Makiki: "The coverage is pretty good, but the commentators tend to talk among themselves and forget to explain things, like the basic rules. Some people watching might not understand the intricacies of the sports."
