Orenstein, 75, was interned
here during WWII

By Star-Bulletin Staff

Otto Orenstein, 75, of Honolulu, who was interned with Japanese-Americans shortly after the outbreak of World War II, died Sunday in Kaiser Hospital.

A native of Austria, Orenstein escaped the Nazis at the age of 17. With the help of the Castle family, Orenstein and his family settled in Hawaii.

On Dec. 7, 1941, Orenstein saw the bombing of Pearl Harbor from a Kaimuki hill. The following day, he and his parents were interned at Sand Island. They were let out four months later when "they figured out how ridiculous it was to hold Austrian people who already had been persecuted by the Germans," Orenstein said in a Nov. 5, 1988, article.

Orenstein sought restitution for being interned, but the government wouldn't approve it.

Orenstein, a retired Hawaiian Telephone Co. statistician, is survived by his wife Clara and brother Anthony.
