Body and Soul

Ju Dou

The foster son of a miserly factory owner falls in love with his father's young bride, Ju Dou (Gong Li), sparking a slow-burning erotic tension that builds to a fiery end. Director Zhang Yimou's provocative, exquisitely filmed fable of passion and retribution was banned by the Chinese government, and nominated for an Academy Award. Hawai'i in Transition -- Vision for a Sustainable Future

New works from Hawaii filmmakers will be presented Friday and Saturday at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

"Lemon Tree," directed by Tim Savage, and "Dancing," directed by Roy Kimura, are based on short stories of life in contemporary Hawaii. Both were featured on "TradeWinds," a television series produced by Dana Hankins. "Transition" is Sheila Laffey's sober documentation of ecological issues in Hawaii and the struggle to preserve what we have. With Hankins and Savage, at 7:30 p.m. Friday; $4. (Unrated)
