DeRenne, Sardinha picked for junior team

JOPLIN, Mo. - Hawaii's only candidates, Keoni DeRenne and Dane Sardinha, have been selected for the inaugural USA Baseball Junior Team after a week of trials.

DeRenne, a 5-foot-8, 150-pound infielder, will be a senior at Iolani this fall; Sardinha, a 5-11, 200-pound catcher, will be a senior at Kamehameha.

The 18-member squad will play Canada tomorrow here, then travel to Jacksonville, Fla., for another week of training before heading to Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, for the International Baseball Association's AAA Junior (ages 16-18) World Championships, Aug. 9-16.



PAVAO WINS ARMY GOLD

Despite shooting a 76 at the Leilehua Course yesterday, Mike Pavao still won the annual Army Amateur Invitational golf tournament by four strokes.

Pavao finished the 54-hole tournament with a 216.

Tied for second place were Merv Matsumoto, the top senior competitor, and Damien Jamilla at 220.

Tom Poe captured A flight with a 230 and Larry Watanabe led B Flight with a 157.



COUCH, MASON TRIUMPH

Mark Couch and Malia Mason won the men's and women's divisions, respectively, yesterday in the 4.8 mile Kailua Beach run held by the Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club.

Couch was timed in 24 minutes, 42 seconds. Lou Tomsic was runner-up in 27:31.

Mason finished in 30:33. Chris Geilfuss took second in 33:19.



MOVERS WIN EASILY

The Hawaii Island Movers built a 6-0 lead after three innings en route to defeating the North County Waves, 12-3, in an exhibition baseball game at Rainbow Stadium yesterday.

Key Voshell had three hits for the Movers. Jaime Aloy and Todd Hamasaki each drove in two runs.



OKANO LEADS

HAWAII At Boise, Idaho, Mark Okano hit a grand slam in a 14-run fourth inning as Hawaii went on to defeat Washington, 16-0, in the Little League Big League (16-18 years) regional tournament.



LITTLE LEAGUE SOFTBALL

Hawaii had a winner and a loser in Little League softball tournaments on the mainland yesterday.

In the Division I Senior Division (13-15 years) tournament at Billings, Montana, Hawaii blanked East Boise (Idaho), 12-0, in a consolation bracket game.

In the Division I Major Division (11-12 years) tournament at Gresham, Ore., Kahaluu-Kaneohe lost to Oregon, 11-4, in a championship bracket game.



HAWAII TEAM SECOND

At Euclid, Ohio, Hawaii's entry in the Continental Amateur Baseball Association World Series for 18 year olds finished second last week.

Needing to defeat New York twice on championship-game day, Hawaii won the first game, 5-4, then lost, 8-6.

Hawaii players on the all-tournament team are second baseman Pat Walsh, third baseman Lohiau Cofran, outfielder Jonah Martin and pitchers Charlton Carter and Damon Yee. Ricky Caraballo was named the MVP hitter.



IRONMAN TRIATHLON QUALIFIERS

The following athletes from Hawaii have qualified for the Ironman Triathlon World Championships Oct. 26 at Kailua-Kona.

They are Theodore Thome, Chris Csordas, Brigid O'Meara, Rachel Portner, Chris Tang, Lindsay Weeks and David Cobb.



SAMOA-HAWAII GOLF

The Samoa-Hawaii Festival golf tournament will be held Friday at Ala Wai Course.

The three-person scramble costs $85 and includes a banquet, prizes and entertainment.

Samoan Flag Day includes athletic events at Keehi Lagoon through Aug. 10.

A bowling tournament will be held in conjunction with Samoan Flag Day Thursday at Aiea Bowl.

REFEREES CLINIC

The National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association will conduct a Hawaii Regional Clinic Friday, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., and Saturday, 6:45 to 6 p.m., at Punahou School.

The fee is $25 and includes the physical test and a T-shirt.

A college coaches and athletic directors instructional clinic is set for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m..

HAWAII TO NATIONALS

The AAU Hawaii Warriors, 14 boys and one girl from Oahu, will represent Hawaii at the 12-and-under AAU National Baseball Championships in Minnesota, Friday through Aug. 9.

Team members are Dallas DeFries, Todd LaFountaine, Brandon Loo, Mitchell Loo, Nicholas Matsuoka, Terri Nakata, Waipa Nishimura, Daniel Nitahara, Justin Ogasawara, Jason Onishi, Jason Owens, Michael Robinson, Michael Shiroma, James Strombach and Paul Wallrabenstein.

The coaches are Paul Wallrabenstein III, Paul Wallrabenstein Jr., William Wallrabenstein and Nathan Nitahara.



KEIKI SPORT SUNDAY

Bishop Museum will host Meadow Gold Dairies' Keiki Sport Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday.

There will be a breakfast for champions with Hawaii's Olympians, Keiki Hawaiian Games, free Planetarium shows, face painting, and other children's events.
