Pakolea uses sports to
put kids in class

A Palama Settlement program is helping some student-athletes keep their minds on their studies.

Youth enrolled in the Pakolea program aren't allowed to participate in sports unless they do their homework and attend school regularly. Director Larry Sweets says sports are used as an incentive to keep kids in school.

At the settlement's learning center, students can get help with their studies and earn awards for doing well.

Angel Hill, 16, is among those who have benefited, saying he has learned good study habits from the program.

Leage of Women Voters will count
sovereignty votes

The League of Women Voters will oversee ballots cast in the Hawaiian Sovereignty Elections Council's native Hawaiian vote.

The neutral group - which has assisted in Hawaii elections for many years - today said it will monitor the inventory and tabulation of the 85,000 mail-in ballots to ensure a credible, verifiable vote.

The mail-in vote asks registered Hawaiians whether they should elect delegates to discuss sovereignty.

The last wave of ballots was sent last Friday. Registered voters who have not received their ballots by Aug. 1 should call the council at 587-2834. The deadline to return them is Aug. 15.

Isle carpenters union backs Harris for mayor

The Hawaii Carpenters Union is supporting Mayor Jeremy Harris for re-election.

The union also backed the successful Harris bid for mayor in 1994, the same year it backed Frank Fasi's unsuccessful run for governor.

Harris received the formal endorsement yesterday at Hilton Hawaiian Village, where he addressed the 1996 Biennial Convention of the Hawaii Carpenters Union.

Three cars set afire this weekend
at Puck's Alley

Three vehicles parked in the Puck's Alley parking garage in Moiliili were deliberately set on fire this weekend two weeks after another vehicle was torched at the same location.

There appears to be no connection between the owners of the vehicles, fire investigators said.

Two of the vehicles, a van and a pickup truck, were set on fire at about the same time Friday. Police said the van sustained about $5,000 damage.

While firefighters were trying to put out the van fire on the second floor of the lot at 7:40 p.m., a Puck's Alley employee discovered a fire in the bed of the pickup truck parked on the ground floor and put it out.

On Saturday at 11 p.m., a 1992 Honda Prelude was set on fire from the inside after its rear window was broken. That fire also took place on the second parking level. Damage was estimated at $11,000.

A Jeep Cherokee was burned at the same location earlier this month, fire investigators said.
