Isle hotel occupancy slips,
room rates advance

Hotel occupancy in Hawaii was down slightly in June, compared with a year ago, but room rates were up, according to a monthly report by the accounting and management consulting firm PKF-Hawaii.

Statewide, hotels and resort condominiums averaged an occupancy of 75.96 percent last month, compared with 76.32 percent in June 1995.

The average daily room rate last month was $122.83, up 8.45 percent from the year-earlier average rate of $113.26, PKF reported.

The beachfront hotels in Waikiki had a strong month, with average occupancy of 86.37 percent, down less than two percentage points from 88.16 percent a year earlier, and a June average daily room rate of $146.79, up 9.4 percent from $134.13 in June 1995.

Occupancy on the Big Island, while lagging the rest of the neighbor islands, improved to 61.54 percent, from 53.2 percent a year earlier, and the Big Island average room rate was $123.94, up 10.8 percent from $111.89.

Maui had an occupancy rate of 71.14 percent last month, down from 72.77 in June 1995, and an average daily room rate of $139.79, up from $133.51. Kauai had an average occupancy of 69.97 percent, up from 66.99 percent. The island's average room rate last month was $133.27, up from $125.22 a year earlier.

The survey included 55 percent of the hotel and condominium units in the state, PKF said.
