Surf 'Net site
for beach safety tips

Before you get caught in this summer's surf, splash over to http://www.aloha.com:80/~lifeguards/sitemap.html, a project of the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association.

Hang your 10 fingers over a list of all of Oahu's best surfing beaches. Ralph S. Goto, chief staff person for the association, says the site has information on Oahu's beaches with lifeguards, ocean safety advice, hazardous conditions, sharks and other dangerous ocean organisms and Hawaiian lifeguard services.

It was put together by Jose Lee, a computer consultant, former City Council aide and senior administrator with the former Hawaii Medical Association's emergency medical services program.

He reports that in Hawaii, 38 residents drown each year. So a little more knowledge about beach safety wouldn't hurt.

The site gives a lifeguard's view of Oahu beaches, including tips on what to watch out for.

"The waters in the beach's channel area may look calm, but there can be strong undercurrents, swift tidal changes - near the reef area - and deceptive distances to what may look like safe reef areas or rocks," the site warns about Ala Moana beach.

The site is picking up fans faster than Derek Ho snagging tubes at Pipeline. For instance, Chris Brewster, lifeguard chief in San Diego, said that Honolulu's site "puts all other similar sites to shame."
