Tenant can't be forced to
pay for credit check
QUESTION: I am a landlord and have heard that on the mainland landlords can require a potential renter to fill out a credit-check application. Could I do that here and pass on the cost of processing the application?
ANSWER: State Consumer Protector Jo Ann Uchida said a landlord can ask a potential tenant to fill out a credit-check application. She warns, however, that the cost of processing a credit check cannot be forced upon the prospective tenant.
