THEY don't call football games on account of rain, and apparently they don't call off weddings of football players due to precipitation either. And so it was that a contingent of wet and chilled celebrants from the wedding of New York Giants wide receiver Mike Sherrard and bride Kathy showed up with a party of 35 at Nicholas Nickolas after rainy outdoor nuptials. G.M. Yani Placourakis promptly turned off the air conditioner in the private dining room, hoping to warm things up a bit. S.F. 49er linebacker Ken Norton, a classmate of Sherrard's at UCLA, did "yo-man" service, toweling off the soggy guests - paying particular attention to the bridesmaids. The sun reappeared in time to set around dinner time, and all proclaimed it a good omen, though the squishy groom quipped, "I thought rain was supposed to be a Hawaiian blessing. I think they ought to make up their minds." ... MEANWHILE, also at Nick Nick's atop the Ala Moana Hotel, attorney Jon Miho was hosting a soiree for 40 friends and family including actor Jason Scott Lee and the ubiquitous Kimo Kahoano. Making a spirited entrance during dinner was Kaui Hill, attired as his alter ego, Bu La'ia. And, as is the local custom of bringing something for the host, Bu brought out a large ulua, and reservation manager Spencer Hisatake was recruited to clean it. One diner was overheard telling another, "When they say 'fresh catch of the day' here, I guess they mean it." ...
YOU can't win dept.: Taking to heart the doctor's advice to eat a healthy breakfast, I've become accustomed to starting the day with a bowl of cereal with low-fat milk, sliced bananas and strawberries. Then came the strawberry scare with people taking sick and even dying from eating them. Now we're told bananas are a potential menace. What's next - Wheaties? ... Every year since they donated their precious painting of Theodore Wores' "The Lei Maker" to the state, San Francisco's Shenson brothers would return "to visit her." Dr. Jess Shenson is back on this, the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the gift and will be honored at a party Friday at the Academy of Arts. His brother Ben, also a doctor and his longtime associate in medicine, died last year, but he'll be here in spirit ...
SOME time back an item here asked if anyone had an old spare computer that they'd be willing to donate to the Pacific Aerospace Museum. The museum folks now tell me that Jack Bates of Seigle Starr McCombs donated a Mac and, "It's been working like a champ ever since it was installed." As one museum volunteer put it, probably inspired by David Letterman, "You are no doubt the most powerful man in journalism today." All said with tongue in cheek, of course, and it's not easy talking that way ...
ONE of the characters on ABC's "Partners" Monday night was telling a fib to another character and said his girlfriend had to go to Hawaii to work on a film version of "Hawaii Five-O." The guy shrieked, "Oh no, they'll ruin it!" He wanted to know who's playing McGarrett. "Jack Nicholson," the first guy said, thinking on his feet. (Can't you just hear him saying, "Book 'em, Danno.") ... Incidentally, the real Danno, James MacArthur, is in town from California. He plans to spend a month seeing old pals ...
