Akebono wins,
Takanohana loses

NAGOYA, Japan - Akebono, or Chad Rowan of Hawaii, pulled ahead of Takanohana today when his rival grand champion was upset in a long tussle with Kotonowaka in the 15-day Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.

Akebono kept a clean slate at 3-0 by sending out Aogiyama (0-3) in a few seconds.

Takanohana, bidding for a 14th tournament title, was beaten for the first time in 16 matches.

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, pushed out Daishoho for his third victory without a loss.

Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii, used his 603-pound weight to drive out 233-pound Kyokudozan, leaving both at 1-2.

In the juryo division, Hawaii's George Kalima (2-1), pushed out Dewaarashi but William Hopkins (1-2) of Hawaii fell victim to Asahizato's overarm throw.

In a junior division bout, Hawaii's Eric Gasper (2-0), threw out Tachinoiwa.
