
The 42-mile race, along Molokai's north shore from Halawa Valley on the east to the Kaluakoi Resort on the west, pitted 12 of the islands' top paddlers based on their finish in the Kaiwi Challenge Molokai-to-Oahu race in May.
The Fotis, switching paddling chores along a course that neither had raced before, finished at 4:32:32, just one minute ahead of second-place Walter Guild and Mark Rigg of the Outrigger Canoe Club. The Foti brothers represented the Lanikai Canoe Club.
Hawaii entries include Peristroika, a 39.4-foot slop skippered by Gib Black, and Oa Oa, a 30-foot sloop from Maui being handled jointly by Jay Pary and Alan Thoma.
The race is held biennially in even-numbered years and is open to all mono-hulled sailboats over 24 feet long.

Ekahi defeated the Kailua Americans, 8-1, on Saturday and rolled past the same team again on Sunday, 11-1.
Pavao, who beat Regan Lee 1-up last year, was scheduled to meet Francis Olina in the first-round match this morning.
David Ishikawa was the medalist in the 64-player field with a 1-under-par 71 in yesterday's qualifying. Pavao shot a 72 but drew the top-seeded spot as the defending champion.
The tournament will continue tomorrow and Thursday, with the 36-hole semifinals scheduled for Friday and the 36-hole final Sunday.
In the 14's Division, the Kamehameha Volleyball Club, coached by Sheri Cariaga, finished sixth. The Asics Rainbow Team 14-1, coached by Howard Wallace, came in 11th while the Asics Rainbow Team 14-2, coached by former Ohio State middle blocker Dawn MacDougall, placed 25th.
Ho'oikaika Blue from Waimea, Kauai, coached by Richard Bucasas, finished 31st and the Asics Rainbow Team 14-3, coached by Suzanne Eagye Cox, was 41st.
In the 16's Division, Outrigger Canoe Club, coached by Kisi Haine, finished in 17th place. The Asics Rainbow Team 16-2, coached by Daryl Wong, was 35th.
In the 18's Division, the Asics Rainbow Team 18-2, coached by Angelica Ljundquist, placed 55th out of 253 teams.
Members of the winning team, representing District III, were: Kekoa Eskaran, Kina'u Puhi, Tyler Ryan, Joey Medeiros, Kai Bowman, Shannon Cazimero, Chris Rodrigues, India Soo, Marsha Heimuli, Pono Kahuanui, Kurt Nakamura, Kekai Nakamura, Kekoa Libron and Frankie Collo.
