Bougainvillea
now at Ewa golf course

QUESTION: What ever happened to the bougainvillea plants at City Hall and the Municipal Building on King Street? How are their replacements - very colorful annuals - being maintained?

ANSWER: The majority of the bougainvillea in front of City Hall and at the Municipal Building went to the new Ewa Village Golf Course, said Carol Costa, director, city Office of Information and Complaint. The rest have been sprinkled around at various other park sites, she said.

Orange and yellow marigolds replaced the bougainvillea at City Hall, and multi-colored begonias replaced bougainvillea in front of the Municipal Building. These replacements are maintained by a small Building Department grounds crew, as part of their regular responsibilities, Costa said.

"It's just one of their regular duties here," she said. "The planting was done by the Parks beautification people."

The bougainvillea did not bloom well. The plants were getting so tall they were difficult to keep trimmed for ceremonial events, Costa said.

"The present plants are not the kind that will take hold the way bougainvillea does," she said.
