Retired HNA printer Charles Dunn, 88

By Harold Morse
Star-Bulletin

Charles M. Dunn of Phoenix, Ariz., a Honolulu Star-Bulletin and Hawaii Newspaper Agency typesetter for 45 years, died Friday in Arizona. He was 88.

Honolulu-born Dunn was long active in the Boy Scouts of America, ultimately winning a Silver Beaver award. He joined Boy Scout Troop 14 at Royal School in 1921. In later life, he became a merit badge counselor and member of the National Eagle Scout Association.

He also was a 4-H counselor, and he founded the Hawaii Audubon Society in 1939. Dunn, a flower lover, also belonged to the Bonsai and Hibiscus clubs. He taught first aid, rescue skills and nature craft. His hobbies included weather forecasting and hiking.

He hung up his blue printer's apron for the last time April 29, 1975, after having begun his career with the Star-Bulletin as an office boy in 1930. His retirement made him the subject of a Star-Bulletin editorial. It concluded: "Charles M. Dunn is one of the interesting people you meet in the newspaper business."

Star-Bulletin writer Tomi Knaefler found him equally interesting. "Let George do it" is probably a phrase unbeknownst to Charles Matthew Dunn," she wrote. "He's a 'doer' of the old

school -- the kind who gazes up at the sky, sees a bird, gets interested and pretty soon has a host of others interested not only in the bird, but also in its relatives, their likes and dislikes and, naturally, their welfare. As a matter of fact, Charlie, in just such a way, mushroomed a personal interest in birds to form the Hawaii Audubon Society."

But Dunn wasn't done with just that, she said. "He branched into a number of other community service projects."
