Four-run ninth boosts Movers

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Trailing 7-4 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the Hawaii Island Movers parlayed two singles, a wild pitch and a three-run homer by Matt Priess into an 8-7 victory over the Alaska Fairbanks Goldpanners yesterday.

The Movers finished the Alaska League baseball series against the Goldpanners with a 3-4 record.

Sean Murphy opened the ninth with a single off Dan Boone, a 42-year-old left-hander who pitched for the Hawaii Islanders (Pacific Coast League) during the 1980 season.

Jamie Aloy walked and Priess belted a three-run homer over the left-field wall to tie the score.

Buster Small then walked and after a wild pitch moved pinch-runner Matt Reynolds to second, Sean Takamori's two-out single to the gap in right-center field scored the game-winning run.

MA, RAKELA TRIUMPH

At Wailea, Maui, Christopher Ma, reigning Hawaii High School singles champion, defeated Wendell Pierce of Berkeley, Calif., 6-4, 7-5, to win the Wailea Open men's open singles tennis championship yesterday.

July Rakela, director of tennis at the Orinda Country Club in California, won the women's open singles crown by defeating Oahu's Judy Weitz, 6-1, 6-3.

PEARL CITY BOOTERS HOT

Semifinals and final matches were held in three boys' and three girls' divisions yesterday in the 16th annual Rainbow Youth Soccer Tournament at Kapiolani Park.

Pearl City teams won two boys' titles (divisions 2 and 3) and one girls' championship (division 2) and only a 4-3 victory by Pacific Palisades in the boys' division 4 title game prevented Pearl City from claiming all the boys' hardware up for grabs yesterday.

San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) won the girls' division 3 and 4 crowns, defeating Diamond Head in both championship matches, 1-0.

HAWAII SURFERS ADVANCE

At Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, Kaipo Jaquias, Derek Ho and John Shimooka, all from Hawaii, won their heats in the $130,000 CSI Billabong Pro in 4- to 6-foot surf yesterday.

However, Hawaii's Sunny Garcia was ousted by Australian Mark Occhilupo and Ho's victory came at the expense of fellow Hawaii surfer Ross Williams.

BAILEY, WOKASCH WIN

David Bailey and Jeannie Wokasch won the men's and women's divisions, respectively, yesterday in the five-kilometer Run for the Rain Forest race in upper Manoa Valley.

Bailey was timed in 16 minutes, 15 seconds. Wokasch finished in 18:40.

MILILANI WINS TITLE

At Wailuku, Maui, Mililani fought back from the loser's bracket to win the Hawaii Region Mustang (9-10 years) Baseball Tournament yesterday with an 11-0 victory over Wai-Kahala at the War Memorial Stadium youth field.

Dane Mizusawa pitched the shutout for Mililani.

The 10-run rule halted the game after four innings.

Mililani will represent Hawaii in the Mustang West Zone Tournament at Valencia, Calif., Aug. 1-5.
