Bega in new post with BHP Hawaii Inc.

After 22 years working up the ranks at BHP Hawaii Inc., Thomas Bega has been named area superintendent for the Hawaii refinery. His responsibilities will include overseeing operations at the company's jet fuel, hydrogen, propane and sulfur units.

In the future, Bega sees the refinery benefiting more from employee suggestions.

"We're getting a lot of hourly employees involved in the decision-making loop," he said. "We've been working on this for the past two or three years and it's starting to pick up speed."

Bega was serving as manager of the BHP Gas Company's synthetic natural gas plant at the Campbell Industrial Park. Prior to that he worked at the BHP refinery. He spent four years in the Air Force before joining the refinery in 1974.

Bega and his wife, Barbara, live in Mililani. They have four children: Brandon, 20; Jennifer, 17; Sharon, 14; and Nicholas, 12.
